Ku Hye-sun explains her 'pathological lying' as a tool for motivation

Actress Ku Hye-sun shared her candid thoughts regarding the "pathological lying" controversies surrounding her, revealing a unique method of self-management.

Appearing on MBN's "Kim Ju-ha's Day and Night" on the 18th, Ku admitted without hesitation when asked, "Haven't you heard a lot of talk about you having pathological lying tendencies?" responding, "I have heard it a lot."

She explained that she reveals her plans before taking action because she believes it is essential to "put it out into words first."

"I know myself too well," Ku confessed. "If I speak first, social interactions occur, which makes it so that I cannot help but do it. Conversely, I know that if I don't speak, I will ultimately not do it, so I tend to speak first on purpose."

What some perceive as "pathological lying" is actually a psychological tactic she uses to drive herself into action.

Ku also offered an honest answer regarding why she frequently wears the same clothes. After laughing, she assessed herself by saying, "It's not because I'm frugal, but because I'm truly lazy. I am a person who doesn't do things well because I am lazy."

She emphasized that this is a method she chose because she understands her own tendencies better than anyone, adding, "That is why I must speak first to move."

However, she revealed that her family worries about this habit. "My mother always tells me, 'Don't speak first,'" Ku shared, adding, "I tell her, 'Mom, if I don't speak, I eventually won't do it. I speak first because I know I will give up.'"

Her candid confession regarding her habit of announcing plans despite her mother's dissuasion drew significant interest from viewers.

Ku, who debuted in the entertainment industry as an advertising model in 2002, earned widespread acclaim as an actress in the sitcom "Nonstop 5" and dramas such as "Ballad of Seo-dong," "Pure in Heart," "The King and I," and "Boys Over Flowers." She later expanded her career as a director with films such as "The Peach Tree" and "Dowder."

She has also remained dedicated to her academic pursuits. After graduating from Sungkyunkwan University's Department of Film, Video, and Multimedia in 2024, she completed a Master of Engineering program at the KAIST Graduate School of Science Journalism. Recently, she has ventured into entrepreneurship by launching a "folding hair roller" she developed herself, though the product has sparked mixed reactions online due to its high price point.
