Ku Hye-sun reflects on human dignity after emergency medical exposure

Actress Ku Hye-sun candidly revealed the extreme fear and psychological shock she experienced due to life-threatening food allergies and anaphylactic shock. She drew significant attention by discussing her experience during emergency medical treatment, confessing, "It made me think about what human dignity is."

Appearing on the MBN current affairs and culture program "Kim Ju-ha's Day and Night" broadcast on the 18th, Ku shared how her health issues once forced her to suspend her professional activities.

During the broadcast, Ku explained the condition that had plagued her for a long time, stating, "I had food allergies. I had allergic reactions to most foods."

She revealed that the condition went beyond simple discomfort, reaching moments where her life was in danger. Recalling the situation, Ku said, "I fainted about twice during filming. I collapsed in the bathroom, and a sanitation worker discovered me after seeing my hair sticking out from outside the door."

She continued, "At that time, I even thought, 'I hope no one opens the door.'" This highlighted the fear and embarrassment she felt regarding being discovered even while losing consciousness.

After being rushed to the hospital, Ku suffered further psychological shock during the emergency treatment process. She explained that while the medical procedures were intended to save her life, the experience of her body being exposed in an unexpected way remained a significant and traumatic memory.

"I once practiced playing the role of a paramedic," Ku said. "There was a scene where clothes are cut off with scissors to perform emergency treatment for a cardiac arrest patient. In reality, my clothes were completely removed during an emergency."

She added, "After experiencing that situation firsthand, I thought, 'I shouldn't die here.' At the same time, I began to think about human dignity."

Her explanation suggests that while saving a life is the top priority in an emergency, the shame and fear felt by the patient are human emotions that cannot be overlooked.

Ku also mentioned a poem that came to mind during those moments. "There was a poem about how, when an accident happens, the first thing you think about is whether you changed your underwear," she said. "I didn't know the meaning before, but after experiencing such a situation myself, I came to understand that feeling."

The reference touches on the instinctive human desire to protect one's dignity and privacy even in the face of death, conveying the complex emotions Ku felt following the accidents.

Ku also revealed the turning point that allowed her to overcome her allergies. Explaining her decision to challenge her dietary restrictions, she said, "People live to eat, so I couldn't just not eat."

Specifically naming soy-marinated crab as the food she craved most, she said, "The food I wanted to eat most before dying was soy-marinated crab. I prepared allergy medicine and injections and ate it with the mindset of 'let's eat and die.'"

Contrary to her fears, no major adverse reactions occurred, and she stated that her fear of food gradually disappeared afterward.

"Strangely, no symptoms appeared. Since then, I have been able to eat all kinds of food well," Ku shared.

She has essentially moved past being a severe allergy patient who had to be careful with every meal, regaining the joys of daily life.
