Kim Min-hee and Hong Sang-soo sweep Locarno Film Festival awards

Actor Kim Min-hee and director Hong Sang-soo have once again captured the attention of the international film community, winning major awards side-by-side at the 79th Locarno International Film Festival for their film 'No Place to Look'. Kim received the Best Actress award, while Hong took home Best Director, marking a dual success for the production in both acting and direction.

Hong and Kim attended the awards ceremony in Switzerland on the 15th (local time). Hong's 35th feature film, 'No Place to Look', emerged as a triple crown winner, securing Best Director, Best Actress, and the Ecumenical Jury Prize.

The rapport between the two drew significant attention during Kim's moment of victory.

Sitting alongside Hong in the audience, Kim expressed radiant joy as her name was announced. Hong smiled and lightly patted her on the back as the two shared the moment together.

Stepping onto the stage, Kim expressed her gratitude, saying, "I am grateful to the director for making a film as beautiful as a poem," and added, "I am so thankful to my colleagues, and I want to share this award with them."

As she continued her speech, Kim appeared visibly moved and momentarily choked up. She then mentioned an acquaintance, stating, "I am with the baby right now," before declaring, "From now on, I will act with only a heart of true love."

She further added, "Whenever my heart feels heavy or suffocated, I will make sure to watch this film again. Thank you, Director."

Kim remained by Hong's side during his Best Director win. When his name was called, she held his hand to congratulate him, and Hong calmly stepped onto the stage to deliver his remarks.

"I am grateful to the committee for inviting me to screen my film. I also thank the jury for their warm interest," Hong said briefly.

This recognition is significant as it provides official international validation for Hong's cinematic vision and Kim's acting prowess, independent of the controversies surrounding their private relationship.

'No Place to Look' follows Sang-hee, who lived with her grandparents after her parents divorced during her childhood, as she searches for her mother who settled on Jeju Island. The film swept major categories at the festival, earning praise for Kim's delicate portrayal of the character's inner life through Hong's signature style of capturing subtle shifts in everyday relationships.
