Fin.K.L to resume activities after 21 years with full group comeback
First-generation K-pop legends Fin.K.L are returning as a full group, marking their first continuous activities since 2005.
The first-generation girl group Fin.K.L is finally returning for full group activities. As news spreads that members Lee Hyo-ri, Ock Joo-hyun, Lee Jin, and Sung Yu-ri are preparing to promote under the Fin.K.L name, public attention is focused on the return of the iconic group that dominated the music industry from the late 1990s to the early 2000s.

Gemstone E&M officially announced on the 21st that they are preparing for Fin.K.L's full group activities alongside the four members. It has been approximately 21 years since Fin.K.L pursued continuous activities under their team name rather than a one-off project, following their 2005 digital single "Forever Fin.K.L."
This announcement is garnering significant attention because it differs from their 2019 appearance on JTBC's "Camping Club." At that time, the four members reunited after about 14 years to reflect on their past through travel and conversation, releasing the new song "Like the Song That Remains" for their fans. However, those activities were closer to a special project centered around a variety show.
This time, the starting point is different. Gemstone E&M explained that this is a new beginning for continuous activities under the name Fin.K.L, moving beyond a mere one-off meeting. While specific digital music releases or performance schedules have not yet been fully disclosed, the move is significant as it intends to restart the team rather than serving as a simple reunion event.
Debuting in 1998, Fin.K.L was one of the first-generation girl groups that changed the landscape of Korean popular music. Starting with "Blue Rain," they built a wide range of concepts that swung between pure images and intense performances, releasing a series of hits such as "To My Boyfriend," "Eternal Love," and "Now."
The significance of Fin.K.L lies beyond their number of hits. Their emergence was a cultural event that expanded the way girl groups were consumed. The individual personalities of the members and the team's brand grew simultaneously, setting a precedent for subsequent girl groups to expand their reach into variety shows, acting, and fashion in addition to music.
After group activities were suspended, the paths of the four members diverged. Lee Hyo-ri established herself as a pop culture icon through solo music and variety shows, while Ock Joo-hyun became a leading actress on musical stages. Lee Jin and Sung Yu-ri also continued their respective careers through acting and broadcasting, moving far beyond their origins as members of Fin.K.L.
Therefore, this reunion is not simply the four members returning as they were in the past. As the four individuals, who have built diverse careers over more than 20 years, meet again as one team, the Fin.K.L the public will see is bound to be different from the group of 1998.
In that sense, the 2019 "Camping Club" serves as an important precursor. At that time, the members met after a long hiatus to share past conflicts and memories candidly, eventually gifting "Like the Song That Remains" to their fans. That song was the first new music Fin.K.L had released since 2005.
The title "Like the Song That Remains" overlaps with the narrative of Fin.K.L's reunion. The song carried the message that although time has passed and lives have changed, the team's name still lives on through music and the memories of fans. If that reunion left fans feeling that Fin.K.L was merely paused, this announcement seeks to turn that possibility into active promotion.
What is particularly interesting is that none of the four members are living in their past heyday. For Lee, Fin.K.L was the starting point of her career, but she has since built an independent world through solo activities. Ock has carved out her own genre as a musical actress, while Lee and Sung have also maintained long-standing careers in acting and broadcasting.
Ultimately, the key to this comeback is not whether they can replicate the past, but how they will integrate the distinct identities of the four members into the established Fin.K.L brand. While recreating past hits alone may not be enough to engage the 2026 public, the historical significance of Fin.K.L cannot be ignored.
Gemstone E&M has stated they plan to sequentially unveil various activities to create new moments with fans. Jason Lee, the managing director in charge of group planning and operations, described Fin.K.L as artists with symbolic meaning in Korean music history and expressed his intent to create new memories with the fans who have waited so long.
The 21-year gap is more than just a number. The generation that was not even born when Fin.K.L debuted has now become the primary consumers of K-pop, while the fans who remember them are now in their 30s and 40s. For old fans, the name invokes memories of youth; for the new generation, it represents a cultural legacy of K-pop girl group history.
Thus, Fin.K.L's return is more than just a "first-generation girl group retro trend." It is a simultaneous activation of the team's enduring name and the current relevance of each member.
While the 2019 reunion left fans wondering if they would ever see the group again, the 2026 announcement provides a clear answer. Seven years after "Camping Club" and 21 years since their last full group activity in 2005, Fin.K.L is no longer just a memory, but a team standing at a new starting line.
The core interest will be whether the four will simply perform their old hits or create a new musical grammar that reflects their evolved lives and experiences. If the 1998 Fin.K.L opened a new era for Korean girl groups, the 2026 Fin.K.L will be tested on how they redefine their name 28 years later.
