Court to rule on Lee Mu-jin's 2.1 billion won dispute with BPM Entertainment

The court's decision regarding the exclusive contract dispute between singer Lee Mu-jin and his former agency, BPM Entertainment (hereinafter BPM), is expected to be released on the 27th. This dispute, which began over approximately 2.1 billion won in unpaid settlements, is drawing intense interest as Lee Mu-jin's side has already secured a preliminary injunction to suspend the validity of the contract.

The 28th Civil Division of the Seoul Central District Court will deliver the verdict this afternoon on the lawsuit filed by Lee Mu-jin against BPM seeking confirmation of the non-existence of the exclusive contract's validity.

The origin of this case was the settlement issue. After notifying BPM of his intention to terminate the exclusive contract last March, Lee Mu-jin applied for a preliminary injunction to suspend the contract's validity. Lee's side sought the court's judgment, claiming they had not received settlement payments for a certain period.

Lee's side argued that they had not received the settlement payments corresponding to the second through fourth quarters of last year and the first quarter of this year. Although the contract termination had already been notified, effectively ending the exclusive relationship between the two parties, they filed the lawsuit on the grounds that a formal judicial determination was necessary to confirm whether the contract's validity truly no longer exists.

Lee Mu-jin and BPM entered into an exclusive contract in February 2022. Since then, BPM has grown its presence in the music industry by signing various artists such as Soyou, VIVIZ, and Lee Mu-jin. However, as disputes surrounding contracts and settlement issues with signed artists have continued, interest in the contract transparency and settlement structures of entertainment agencies has increased.

During the preliminary injunction stage, the court ruled in favor of Lee Mu-jin. The court decided to suspend the validity of the exclusive contract signed between Lee Mu-jin and BPM until the verdict of the main lawsuit is delivered.

In particular, the court specified that BPM must not engage in negotiating or concluding contracts with third parties regarding Lee Mu-jin, demand musical activities against Lee's will, or request third parties to prohibit Lee's activities. This is interpreted as a measure to prevent the agency from restricting the artist's independent activities during the dispute process over the exclusive contract.

In this process, the position of BPM is also noteworthy. BPM stated that they would not object to Lee's claim to suspend the contract's validity, saying, “We intend to accept Lee Mu-jin's request.” As the positions of both sides did not clash significantly, the court finalized the verdict date without proceeding with lengthy separate oral argument procedures.

This case goes beyond a simple contract termination between an agency and a singer; it touches upon how transparently the settlement and exclusive contract structures operate between entertainment agencies and artists. Especially in the popular music industry, where activity areas such as music releases, performances, broadcasts, and advertisements are highly specialized, contract clauses regarding the timing of revenue generation, cost processing, profit distribution, and settlement periods are directly linked to the artist's rights.

Lee Mu-jin made his name known to the public by finishing third in the final round of JTBC's 'Sing Again' Season 1 in 2021. Since then, he has established himself as a powerhouse in music releases, gaining recognition for his unique tone and songwriting abilities through songs like 'Traffic Light,' 'Assignment Song,' and 'Youth Comic.' In particular, 'Traffic Light' became his signature song, maintaining a position at the top of music charts for a long time by capturing the anxieties and growing pains of the younger generation in a cheerful melody.

Even amidst the ongoing dispute, Lee Mu-jin ensured the continuity of his activities. In July, he opened a new chapter by signing an exclusive contract with a new label from Mound Media.

Therefore, today's verdict is expected to serve as a turning point that settles the legal relationship with his former agency while more clearly establishing the foundation for Lee Mu-jin's future activities. In particular, since the validity of the exclusive contract has already been suspended during the injunction stage, attention is focused on how the court will ultimately rule on the settlement issues and the contractual relationship in the main lawsuit.
