Comedian Hwang Hyun-hee on why the '10 billion won asset' label drove him from TV
Comedian Hwang Hyun-hee reveals how the '10 billion won asset' label led him to step away from variety shows, emphasizing his journey of recovery.
Comedian Hwang Hyun-hee has opened up about his honest feelings regarding the '10 billion won asset' label that follows him. He confessed that he wanted to show the 'process of recovery' rather than a myth of investment success, but as the exaggerated image became fixed, he eventually stopped appearing on variety programs.

Hwang appeared on the YouTube channel 'Lee Hong-ryeol TV' released on the 17th, where he candidly revealed his inner thoughts regarding his investments and broadcasting activities.
During the appearance, Lee Hong-ryeol introduced Hwang by asking, "Did you really earn 10 billion won?" To which Hwang explained the process of how that label was created, saying, "The expression '10 billion won asset' now follows me everywhere."
He recalled, "I once mentioned that I earned more than 10 times what I made during my days as a comedian through investments," and added, "After that, I appeared on SBS 'Dolsing Fourmen,' and I saw '10 billion won asset' written in the script."
Continuing with his characteristic witty tone, he recalled the situation at the time, saying, "Inside, I thought, 'I've been tricked by the writers again.'"
Hwang revealed that he even requested the production team to tone down the expression.
"I told them I hoped they wouldn't express it to this extent," he said, while showing understanding by noting, "But programs need to become hot topics and generate news articles, so I think that's why such expressions are used."
However, he emphasized that the message he truly wanted to convey was entirely different.
"What I wanted to show wasn't money," Hwang said. "It was the process of a person who once collapsed rising again through studying investment."
In reality, he went through a period where his stages for activity were shrinking amidst the slump of comedy programs and changes in the broadcasting environment. Since then, he has been designing a new second act of his life by focusing on economic studies and long-term investments.
He repeatedly explained that he wanted to share the process of failure, recovery, and the mindset of building assets rather than stories of investment success.
However, his regret was that only the provocative label of '10 billion won asset' was imprinted on the public.
Hwang even made a self-deprecating joke, saying, "Who would like it when a well-known, washed-up comedian shows up having made money?"
He continued, "The stock market is also highly polarized right now," and added, "For those who are struggling, just seeing the word '10 billion won' can be uncomfortable."
This can be interpreted as a remark conscious of the fact that content highlighting asset size can induce a sense of relative deprivation in a social atmosphere where economic gaps are widening.
Recently, in the broadcasting and online content markets, the so-called 'Young Rich' narrative emphasizing 'economic success' has been attracting public attention. At the same time, however, criticisms are steadily being raised that excessive displays of wealth increase social fatigue. Hwang's confession is interpreted as an example showing the concerns of a broadcaster who wanted to convey the meaning of the process rather than success amidst this contemporary atmosphere.
He revealed that he eventually reduced his appearances on variety programs due to this pressure.
"I wanted to talk about the investment process, but people only remembered the '10 billion won asset.'"
"That is why I stopped appearing on variety shows."
Though a short confession, it was a moment that revealed his honest awareness of the image-consumption-centered broadcasting environment.
When Lee asked, "Then how would you like to be introduced in the future?", Hwang replied without hesitation.
"I am just comedian Hwang Hyun-hee."
He added, "I hope to be remembered as a comedian who can talk about economics and current affairs in an entertaining way."
This is interpreted as expressing his will to be evaluated as a broadcaster who has expanded his expertise and pioneered new fields, rather than being consumed simply as a person who succeeded in investment.
From a comedian who once delivered laughter on stage to a broadcaster seeking new possibilities through economic content, Hwang has transformed. Behind the glamorous label of '10 billion won asset' lies his sincerity, wishing to be remembered for the process rather than the numbers.
