Former baseball player Hwang Jae-gyun has opened up about the hollow feelings and unexpected aftermath caused by his retirement ceremony being suddenly postponed due to a heatwave. Not only did the schedule of an acquaintance who flew in from the United States to witness the ceremony fall through, but he also faces a situation where even the commemorative bats, which had already been produced, must be reworked. Having prepared the final scene of his long career, his sense of regret was significant.

On the 29th, Hwang revealed his daily life on the day the retirement ceremony was scheduled to take place during the MBC show 'The Manager'. Originally, the ceremony was planned to be held on August 8 at Suwon KT Wiz Park following a game against the Lotte Giants, but since the game was canceled that day due to a heatwave, the retirement ceremony was also indefinitely postponed.

Looking at the empty baseball stadium, Hwang said, "There have been cancellations due to rain, but I think I am the first in the world to have a cancellation due to a heatwave." He expressed high expectations as the club had prepared the ceremony meticulously, stating, "I never thought it would be canceled. I found out two days ago, and it didn't feel very good."

While it is not uncommon for schedules to change in baseball due to rain, snow, or ground conditions, the fact that both the game and the retirement ceremony were thwarted due to a heatwave was an unpredictable variable for Hwang. In particular, since a retirement ceremony is not just a simple event but a symbolic ritual to share the final moments as an active player with fans, the sudden postponement carried even greater meaning.

The actual damage was not limited to Hwang alone. An acquaintance working as an agent in the United States traveled to Korea to attend the ceremony, only to hear the news that the event was canceled as soon as they stepped off the plane. Hwang expressed his guilt, saying, "I received a call and told them I was sorry and to go back. They asked what they should do since they wasted their airfare."

Ultimately, the two shared an unscheduled meal and drinks, with Hwang picking up the tab. It was a way of offering unexpected comfort to an acquaintance who had traveled a long distance to celebrate the turning point of his life.

The already-produced retirement commemorative bats also became a problem. Hwang had ordered commemorative bats engraved with the retirement date, 'August 8.' He had ordered 28 bats, each costing approximately 200,000 won, totaling about 5.6 million won, but with the retirement date changing, it became difficult to use the existing products.

He played for the Lotte Giants and the Major League Baseball San Francisco Giants before playing for the KT Wiz, and he also participated in several international competitions as a national representative. In particular, he established himself as a core infielder after the founding of the KT Wiz, contributing to the team's 2021 integrated championship, spending important periods of his career with KT.

His decision to retire from active play after the 2025 season was also a choice to conclude an era.
