Koyote's SHIN JI apologizes for declining KT Wiz pitch; performance canceled
Koyote member SHIN JI apologizes to KT Wiz fans after her comments about being a Hanwha Eagles fan sparked controversy over a declined ceremonial pitch.
Following the controversy surrounding Koyote member SHIN JI's decision to decline a ceremonial first pitch for a KT Wiz home game, her agency has issued an official apology. Furthermore, the previously scheduled celebratory performance at the KT Wiz home game has also been canceled following discussions with the club, bringing the controversy to a new phase.

On the 14th, agency JG Star stated in an official position, "The company and SHIN JI have taken the concerns and various opinions expressed by KT Wiz fans very seriously." They added, "After discussions, we have decided not to proceed with the scheduled celebratory performance following amicable consultations with the KT Wiz club."
This decision is interpreted as a measure taken because the controversy surrounding the ceremonial pitch expanded beyond a simple clash of opinions between fandoms into a debate regarding the appropriateness of the celebratory performance. The agency emphasized that the cancellation was decided after sufficient consultation with the club, signaling an intent to minimize the spread of the controversy.
The controversy began when SHIN JI introduced the recruitment process for a KT Wiz home game event in a video recently uploaded to her YouTube channel.
At the time, SHIN JI mentioned that Koyote had received a proposal for a celebratory performance and that she had also personally received a proposal for the ceremonial pitch, stating, "Since I am a Hanwha Eagles fan, I thought doing the ceremonial pitch would be a bit much, so I politely declined."
She continued, after confirming that the game in question was a matchup between the KT Wiz and the Hanwha Eagles, "I wouldn't be able to wear a Hanwha uniform either," and the video included a subtitle that read, 'I'll be waiting for the Hanwha ceremonial pitch.'
After the video was released, the controversy spread primarily through certain online communities and SNS. Some KT fans pointed out that it was inappropriate to emphasize being a fan of the opposing team when invited to an event held at their home stadium. On the other hand, there were many opinions defending SHIN JI, arguing that declining a ceremonial pitch from an opposing club when one has a specific team they cheer for was actually a decision made out of consideration for the fans.
As the controversy grew, JG Star explained the recruitment process in detail to clarify that there had been a misunderstanding.
The agency stated, "The initial proposal was for a special celebratory performance by Koyote to be held after the game concludes. Regardless of supporting a specific club, we decided to appear based on the judgment that the performance is a stage to provide joy to all spectators visiting the venue."
They further explained, "During the process of coordinating the event, an additional proposal for the ceremonial pitch was delivered to SHIN JI personally. Knowing that SHIN JI is well-known as a passionate fan of the Hanwha Eagles, we judged that her performing the ceremonial pitch at a KT Wiz home game would be disrespectful not only to the home team fans but also to the visiting team fans. Thinking it might cause discomfort, we politely declined only the ceremonial pitch."
Furthermore, "In the process of editing and uploading the YouTube content, this background and context were not sufficiently conveyed. As a result, we sincerely apologize for causing misunderstanding and discomfort to KT Wiz fans, contrary to our intentions," the agency said, bowing in apology.
The agency concluded by stating, "Moving forward, the company and the artist will be more cautious in our expressions and methods of communication in all processes of interacting with the public and fans, and we will carefully examine everything to ensure there are no parts that could cause misunderstanding."
This case is evaluated as an instance that once again demonstrates how important the balance between an artist's personal cheering preferences and their public role is in events where the sports and entertainment industries collaborate. At the same time, it suggests that in an environment where fan culture has become diverse, the method of delivery and the context of expression also have a significant impact on public evaluation, regardless of intention.
