Newlywed Kim Jong-kook defines emotional infidelity as a breach of trust
Singer Kim Jong-kook shares his strict views on emotional infidelity and marital trust during a recent appearance on lawyer Park Min-chul's YouTube channel.
Singer and entertainer Kim Jong-kook, who has been married for less than a year, has revealed his personal standards regarding 'infidelity' between spouses. He stated that he views the act of building continuous emotional intimacy with another person as more serious than physical deviations. His remarks, which distinguish between simple physical mistakes and emotional betrayal, revealed his personal values regarding what constitutes a 'breach of trust' in a marital relationship.

On the 10th, Kim appeared on lawyer Park Min-chul's YouTube channel to discuss the topic of infidelity that can occur in married life. Park presented several scenarios to Kim, asking to what extent certain behaviors could be tolerated between a married couple.
Kim's judgment was firm from the very first case. When Park presented a situation where a spouse calls a friend of the opposite sex by pet names typically used between lovers, such as 'honey' or 'sweetie,' Kim immediately replied, "I'm not sure if it's cheating, but it is infidelity."
The level of the problem increased further. Park hypothesized a situation where messages such as "If I am born again, I will marry you," "I really miss you," or "Should I treat you to Busan tomorrow morning?" are sent to a friend of the opposite sex. Even with the added condition that there was no actual meeting or physical relationship, Kim judged this to be infidelity as well.
Kim, in particular, did not view physical deviations and emotional betrayal on the same level. He said, "Physical mistakes aren't necessarily okay, but regardless of whether you are a man or a woman, there are many people who actually live their lives accepting such things." On the other hand, regarding the aforementioned messages, he expressed strong rejection, stating, "It is effectively saying, 'You are that kind of person to me.'"
To him, the decisive issue is not the physical occurrence of the act, but the direction of the heart. He believes that a spouse simply having a friendship with someone of the opposite sex is qualitatively different from continuously exchanging emotional language predicated on a romantic relationship; in the latter case, the trust of the marriage itself can collapse.
Lawyer Park also explained the importance of emotional intimacy from a legal perspective. He noted that one of the important criteria in judicial precedents is whether a spouse has formed an 'emotional connection' with another person, explaining that even without a physical relationship, infidelity severe enough to damage the trust between spouses can be judged as grounds for divorce.
However, the specific scope in which 'infidelity' is legally recognized can vary depending on the factual circumstances of individual cases and the degree of the marital relationship. It is appropriate to view the judgment presented by Kim on the broadcast not as a legal standard replacing court rulings, but as an expression of his own views on marriage.
An interesting point is that while discussing these standards, Kim showed a positive attitude toward marriage itself. When Park asked if he recommends marriage, Kim replied without hesitation, "I unconditionally recommend marriage." While acknowledging the possibility of conflict and betrayal within a marriage, he did not deny the value of the institution and relationship of marriage.
For a long time, Kim has been consumed by the image of the representative 'national single man' in the entertainment industry. On SBS's "My Little Old Boy," he showed the daily life of an unmarried man, revealing his exercise, self-management, and frugal habits, and jokes about marriage and pressure from those around him appeared repeatedly on broadcasts. The fact that he is now presenting clear principles regarding trust and emotional boundaries between spouses after his actual marriage contrasts with his previous variety show image.
Kim shed his long-standing 'single man' image by holding a wedding with a non-celebrity woman last September. The wedding process was also conducted quite privately. Rather than actively disclosing his spouse's identity and private life, he chose a method of protecting the private sphere by focusing on the fact of the marriage itself.
His newlywed home was also a factor that increased interest surrounding his marriage. In April last year, ahead of his marriage, Kim purchased a luxury villa in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, called 'Nonhyeon Apelbaum 2nd,' with an exclusive area of 243㎡ for 6.2 billion won. It was found that he purchased it entirely in cash as no collateral was established on the registry, and Kim later explained that it was a house prepared through long-term savings rather than investment.
In his life after marriage, another side of the 'exercise fanatic' Kim is also continuing. In recent broadcasts, his life as a newlywed, including eating Three Meals a Day with his wife on weekends, has been revealed, showing that his daily life, which was once consumed as a symbol of a 'man living alone,' has changed significantly.
What Kim emphasized in this conversation seems to be closer to the 'direction of the relationship' rather than the 'scale of the act.' While acknowledging the reality that mistakes and conflicts can occur in married life, he finds it difficult to easily tolerate situations where a spouse's emotions continuously lean toward someone else.
In particular, 'emotional infidelity' often does not leave clear evidence like physical relationships, which can lead to more complex conflicts between spouses. This is because everyday actions, such as the frequency of contact, pet names, or the content of conversations, can carry entirely different meanings depending on the context of the relationship. Kim's remarks raise the question of 'what trust between spouses truly is.'
It is also noteworthy that Kim, who for a long time was perceived as an entertainer far removed from marriage, is now speaking about the boundaries of marital relationships as someone actually experiencing newlywed life. Attention is focused on how his remarks—showing a firm stance on where trust breaks down while still recommending marriage—will be received.
