Kim Sumin's husband transitions from prosecutor to lawyer
Former announcer Kim Sumin shares a heartfelt farewell to her husband, Jung Yong-jin, as he leaves the prosecution to start a new career as a lawyer.
Jung Yong-jin, the husband of former announcer Kim Sumin, is embarking on a new chapter as a lawyer after stepping down from his position as a prosecutor. Having previously taken a leave of absence to support his wife during her studies in the United States, he has left the prosecution again only about two months after returning to his post. The family's move to the U.S. and their subsequent return have ultimately culminated in this professional career transition.

On the 28th, Kim Sumin shared photos capturing her husband's last day of work on her personal channel, accompanied by the message, "Let's do well in our family's new phase truly.""
The photos featured a banner Kim Sumin prepared for her husband, which caught the eye. The banner read, "The Republic of Korea is a country that possesses Jung Yong-jin. From handsome prosecutor to idol lawyer. His very existence is an act of patriotism." Her two children also cheered for their father's new beginning with handmade cards that said, "Fighting, Lawyer Dad!"
Kim Sumin also visited the prosecutor's office on her husband's final working day along with her two children. She greeted him as he completed his final duties, writing, "To be with Dad on his last way home.'
The family captured the moment he transitioned away from his professional identity as a prosecutor.
Jung plans to practice law moving forward. Kim announced the change by introducing him as "Lawyer Jung Yong-jin, former handsome prosecutor.'
She also humorously noted that her husband shares the same name as Chung Yong-jin, the chairman of Shinsegae Group. Kim joked about the coincidence, saying, "I've wanted to say this at least once: I am living with a chaebol, if only in name," using the namesake connection to share the family's new beginning with laughter.
This resignation appears to be a choice aligned with the family's lifestyle changes over the past few years rather than a sudden career break.
Previously, Jung had taken a leave of absence to support Kim's studies in the United States. After Kim was accepted to UCLA Law School last year, the family moved to the U.S., where she completed her studies this May.
Following this, Jung returned to his position as a prosecutor in June, but resigned again in August, only two months after his return. After returning to the office, he pivoted his career path to a lawyer in a very short period.
While the nature of the work differs, prosecutors and lawyers share professional expertise as legal professionals. Rather than viewing this as a move to a completely new field, it can be seen as a career transition that expands the investigative and prosecution experience accumulated in the public sector into the private legal market.
Specifically, while a prosecutor serves as a member of a state institution involved in criminal investigations and prosecutions, a lawyer represents the legal interests of clients. Although their professional roles and responsibilities differ, there is significant continuity in their shared foundation of legal knowledge and practical experience.
For Kim, this change also served as a turning point for the entire family's lifestyle. After leaving SBS, she chose a new path through marriage, childbirth, and studying at a U.S. law school. After living in the U.S. and completing her studies, her husband is now also leaving the prosecution to begin a new legal career.
Kim married Jung after leaving SBS in 2021 and has one son and one daughter. After being accepted to UCLA Law School last year, she continued her studies in the U.S. with her family and graduated this past May.
Ultimately, this resignation is more than a single person's change of profession. It is the result of a chain of life choices: an announcer leaving a broadcasting station to study in the U.S., a husband taking leave to support her, his return to work and subsequent resignation, and the transition to becoming a lawyer.
This is why Kim described it as a "new phase." The family has entered a new stage of life by stepping out of their familiar framework and simultaneously choosing a new environment and professional path.
Although his professional title has changed from prosecutor to lawyer, his career as a legal professional continues. All eyes are now on how Jung will leverage his experience from the prosecution to build expertise within the private legal market.
