Kim Young-hee Draws Laughs With Mother-in-Law Story: “They Say a Daughter-in-Law Is a Daughter, But…”

Comedian Kim Young-hee brought both laughter and recognition to a discussion about married life, sharing a realistic episode from her relationship with her mother-in-law and offering the candid advice that, in the end, “a daughter-in-law is not truly a daughter.”

On the KBS entertainment program “Malja Show,” which aired on the 6th, the cast introduced the concern of a daughter-in-law who is currently living with her parents-in-law. The woman explained that her mother-in-law usually shows her deep affection, saying she is “not a daughter-in-law, but my daughter.” Yet whenever conflict arises between the woman and her husband, the mother-in-law repeatedly tells her, “You should endure it,” and “You should understand him,” leaving the daughter-in-law feeling hurt.

After hearing the story, Kim Young-hee responded with advice drawn from her own married life. “That is because she really is not your daughter,” she said plainly, adding that when a wife has argued with her husband, it is better to talk about it with her own mother than with her mother-in-law. Kim also said that, between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, keeping an appropriate distance can actually be the healthier way to maintain the relationship over time.

Kim Young-hee then spoke openly about her own experience. “My mother-in-law is truly like an angel,” she said. “But once, I told her, ‘My husband drinks too much,’ and she looked very firm and said, ‘There is no way he would do that. Even if he did, you should understand him.’” Her recollection immediately made the other cast members laugh.

The mother-in-law’s unexpected response, taking her son’s side instead of reacting as Kim had anticipated, filled the studio with laughter. Kim also looked back on the moment with humor, saying that it was then she fully felt the reality of the situation.
