Shin Gi-ru's philosophy on eating: 'I'm the plus-sized Karina'

Comedian Shin Gi-ru revealed her unique values regarding her appearance and life by candidly explaining why she chooses not to diet. Her attitude is to prioritize her own happiness rather than changing her body to meet the expectations of others.

Shin appeared on JTBC's 'Knowing Bros' on the 6th. During the episode, Kang Ho-dong praised her signature confidence, telling her, "The reason viewers find you charming is that you have self-assurance."

Kang then joked, "Your current looks are already incredible; are you maintaining your weight because you're afraid you won't be able to handle the popularity if you lose weight?" Shin elicited laughter by responding, "That's a good line, Ho-dong. I'm touched."

The conversation, which began with jokes, led to Shin's philosophy regarding her body and eating habits. She stated that the reason she does not diet is "to live happily." She explained that the happiness gained from the joy of eating is more important to her than the satisfaction that could be obtained by reducing her weight.

Shin did not outright reject weight loss. While saying, "There might be good things about losing weight," she added, "If I look in the mirror and feel that I am somewhat lacking, I will lose it." This indicates that she places the standard of judgment on her own satisfaction rather than the evaluation of others.

In particular, she made the set erupt in laughter by saying, "My happiest time is looking in the mirror in the morning. When I look in the mirror, I think, 'Wow, I'm pretty.'"

This was a playful expression of her desire to affirm herself rather than forcing herself to fit into social standards regarding appearance.

Recently, Shin has gained another nickname. Following her existing title of "plus-sized cat-like face," the moniker "plus-sized Karina" has now emerged. Shin joked, "Fans told me I have the 'definitive Karina look,'" and added, "Han So-hee shares a similar vibe."

Of course, rather than an objective classification of appearance, this is closer to humor created by fans comparing Shin's aura and face shape to famous stars. Shin accepted this not as a serious evaluation of her looks, but as material to expand her character, handling it with her signature wit.

This attitude aligns with the image Shin has built with the public over the past few years. Moving away from a character that stayed on the periphery in past broadcasts, she has established a unique presence through a way of speaking that does not hide her body type, eating habits, views on dating, or lifestyle. By distancing herself from the typical celebrity image of needing to be "slim" or "pretty," she has instead converted her individuality into a competitive strength.

In particular, Shin's character has become even more distinct in variety shows that combine mukbang with talk. By expanding the act of eating from simple appetite to joy, human relationships, and daily humor, she has created an entertainment narrative that goes beyond the simplistic image of being "someone who eats a lot."

The noteworthy part of her statement is the question of "for whom are you changing your body" rather than the weight itself. Of course, weight management for health and individual self-determination are separate issues. There is no reason to unconditionally glorify a specific body type or, conversely, to force weight loss.
