Actor Jin Seon-kyu showcased his variety skills on the SBS program 'Master Hang-jun,' engaging in playful bickering with director Jang Hang-jun before sharing a touching story about how his wife, Park Bo-kyung, supported his acting career.
Actor Jin Seon-kyu engaged in comedic bickering with director Jang Hang-jun during the second episode of 'Master Hang-jun' on the 22nd. The broadcast, which saw nationwide viewership ratings rise to 1.7%, featured Jin questioning a contract as "fraud" before sharing how his wife, Park Bo-kyung, supported his acting career.
Actor Jin Seon-kyu displayed explosive variety skills through relentless exposés and witty banter directed at director Jang Hang-jun. The two engaged in constant bickering, ranging from grievances about their first meeting to accusations of pathological lying. The comedic tension peaked when Jin Seon-kyu questioned a contract presented by Jang Hang-jun, asking, “Isn't this a fraud?” However, amidst the laughter, the broadcast also revealed a moving story regarding Jin Seon-kyu's wife, Park Bo-kyung, and how she helped him pursue his dreams.
In the second episode of the SBS variety program 'Master Hang-jun' broadcast on the 22nd, Jin Seon-kyu appeared as a guest to engage in a battle of wits with Jang Hang-jun. The two showed natural chemistry stemming from their long-standing friendship as they traded accusations and counterattacks. Driven by Jin Seon-kyu's performance, the episode recorded a 1.7% viewership rating nationwide based on Nielsen Korea data, a slight increase from the previous episode's 1.6%. In the Seoul metropolitan area, the average rating was 1.6%, with a peak rating of 2.55%.
Jang Hang-jun opened the verbal sparring by recalling their first meeting, exposing that Jin Seon-kyu was much more excited to meet writer Kim Eun-hee than himself. He added a lingering joke, calling Jin "the man who looked down on me until 'The King's Warden'." Jin Seon-kyu countered by attacking Jang's recognition, stating, "Actually, I didn't know Hang-jun hyung very well," and further provoked him by adding that he was naturally filled with admiration when he first met writer Kim Eun-hee.
Jang Hang-jun's specialty of "slander" was also on display. He made the absurd claim that Jin Seon-kyu had sent him dried persimmons with bundles of 50,000 won bills hidden at the bottom of the box. Jin Seon-kyu responded as if the claim were ridiculous, saying, "Have you developed pathological lying? Take some medicine!" Rather than a serious debate over the facts, the two created humor by exaggerating and overturning each other's words, revealing their playful relationship.
Jin Seon-kyu's provocations continued by targeting Jang Hang-jun's pride. Ignoring Jang, who was sitting right in front of him, Jin performed a 90-degree bow toward director Park Chan-wook on a tablet screen. The studio erupted in laughter at the gesture that seemed to subtly snub Jang. However, when asked who he would choose if both Jang Hang-jun and director Park Chan-wook offered him a role at the same time, Jin gave an unexpected answer, stating he would choose Jang Hang-jun.
Even his compliments were unconventional. Jin supported Jang's new challenge, saying, "Director Jang Hang-jun, who has drawn his sword with 'The King's Warden,' will surely cut something with it." While praising him as being in a fresh, new stage, he added that after watching the film, it didn't even feel like a work made by Jang Hang-jun. Jang Hang-jun could not hide both laughter and embarrassment at Jin's speech, which toggled between high praise and sharp jabs within a single sentence.
Amidst the laughter, the broadcast also included sincere reflections on Jin Seon-kyu's life as an actor. He shared his experience during the audition for the film 'The Outlaws,' which served as a major turning point in his career, and spoke of how he was able to continue his acting activities thanks to the support of his wife, Park Bo-kyung. In particular, he spoke candidly about his feelings as a husband watching his wife succeed and be recognized for her own abilities as an actress.
Jin Seon-kyu recalled that when they were expecting a child, his wife said, "You just do acting for now, and I'll be the mother." At a moment when he could have given up his dream for the sake of his family, his wife was the first to support his acting. Jin revealed that upon hearing those words, he vowed to succeed in acting. It was a confession showing that his dream as an actor was not completed by personal desire alone, but was sustained by the sacrifice and belief of his family.
He also expressed pride in his wife, Park Bo-kyung, noting that she passed every audition she went to. He expressed his joy, mentioning that while he worried he wouldn't even be able to give a proper acceptance speech, his wife performed much better than him. His way of sincerely rejoicing in his wife's achievements rather than viewing them as competition or a burden added a heartwarming touch that contrasted with the earlier aggressive banter.
In the latter half of the broadcast, a whimsical audition was held based on a hypothetical upcoming project by Jang Hang-jun. The fictional work, 'Hang-jun is Everywhere!', escalated into increasingly unmanageable settings, including overseas location filming and a production period spanning 10 years. While Jin Seon-kyu shook his head at the absurd conditions, he quickly immersed himself in the roleplay. He dominated the scene by performing everything from "teleportation" acting to using a youthful voice reminiscent of Jang Hang-jun's childhood to skillfully handle the script.
However, the tension remained until the final moment. When Jang Hang-jun presented a contract, Jin Seon-kyu pointed out that the script had not been properly shown and questioned, “Isn't this a fraud?” The bickering between Jang Hang-jun, trying to finalize the appearance, and Jin Seon-kyu, questioning the contract terms, fit the program's "secret audition" setting. With the addition of cast members including Song Eun-i and Kim Poong, the atmosphere remained pleasant until the end as Jang Hang-jun's bluster met Jin Seon-kyu's quick wit.
Jang Hang-jun and Jin Seon-kyu created laughter through mutual slander and direct hits. Their conversation went beyond simple exposure. Jin Seon-kyu's variety skills in fearlessly countering Jang's bluster, combined with his sincere confession about the wife who allowed him to continue his dream, delivered both laughter and emotion in a single episode. Jin Seon-kyu's final strike, questioning the contract as "fraud," remained a pleasant highlight of the broadcast.
