Kim Ho-young cuts ties with acquaintance over unreasonable demands
Musical actor Kim Ho-young reveals why he ended a friendship over a wedding request, amid resurfacing tensions with Ock Joo-hyun.
Musical actor Kim Ho-young has shared an anecdote about ending a relationship with an acquaintance after receiving demands that crossed his personal "line of common sense." While it may seem like a simple episode about singing at a wedding, it has drawn attention for highlighting the boundary between a reasonable favor and an unreasonable demand.

In particular, Kim's remarks are leaving a lingering impression as they come at a time when the so-called "Ok-jang-pan" controversy involving fellow actor Ock Joo-hyun has resurfaced. Last July, Ock publicly stated that she had not received an apology from Kim regarding the controversy at the time and expressed regret over withdrawing her lawsuit.
Recently, on the KakaoBank YouTube channel "Don Kitaka," Kim introduced a case involving an acquaintance who was preparing for marriage, stating, "I guess common sense disappears when it's time to get married." He explained that he was asked by a close acquaintance to sing a congratulatory song at their wedding and intended to comply readily out of consideration for their friendship.
The problem, however, was an additional demand that went beyond the song. While preparing an expensive so-called "SDM" package (studio, dress, and makeup), the acquaintance asked Kim if they could receive a celebrity discount. "SDM" is an industry term referring to the bundled services of studio photography, dress, and makeup for a wedding.
Kim revealed that he declined this request. While he maintained his position to provide the wedding song as planned, a sudden filming schedule on the day of the wedding made it impossible for him to appear on stage himself.
He explained that after asking for the acquaintance's understanding, he proposed sending a junior colleague to sing the song instead. He also intended to cover the cost of the junior's performance himself. In typical human relationships, this would be considered a significant gesture of consideration.
However, the acquaintance's reaction differed from Kim's expectations. Instead of merely expressing disappointment, the acquaintance claimed the junior Kim introduced did not fit the wedding concept and asked, "Could you perhaps get a more famous celebrity to do it?"
Ultimately, Kim revealed that he ended his relationship with that acquaintance. Expressing human disappointment, he said, "There is a period of time during which I have known this person. I never imagined this person would ever say such a thing."
What Kim identified as the problem in this anecdote is not simply money or fame itself. It is interpreted as a sense of displeasure that the person tried to utilize his connections and professional status as a celebrity as a "service resource," exceeding the scope of favors that can be offered in a close relationship.
For celebrities, connections often become an area where private friendships and professional resources overlap. While it might be a one-time request for an ordinary person, for a celebrity, recruiting other celebrities, providing discounts, or appearing at events is directly linked to the realms of labor and contracts. This is why the boundary cannot disappear simply due to friendship.
Kim is an individual who has shown a relatively direct way of speaking regarding these relational boundaries. As he has expanded his activities from the musical stage to broadcasting and YouTube, he has built a character around his uniquely honest and proactive way of speaking, making this recent remark a glimpse into his philosophy on interpersonal relationships.
However, the background of why this remark is gaining attention again lies in the "Ok-jang-pan" controversy that shook the musical industry four years ago. In 2022, suspicions of "favoritism casting" were raised regarding the casting for the 10th-anniversary production of the musical "Elisabeth." At the time, Kim posted on SNS, "The days of a chaotic mess are over. Now it is 'Ok-jang-pan'," which led to widespread interpretations that he was targeting Ock Joo-hyun.
Ock's side denied the suspicions of improper involvement in the "Elisabeth" casting at the time and proceeded with a defamation lawsuit against Kim and netizens. However, as the controversy grew, Ock withdrew the lawsuit against Kim and expressed her intention to rectify the commotion while repeatedly denying the casting suspicions.
Kim's side later reported that they spoke directly with Ock to clear up the misunderstanding and settled the matter amicably. Although the legal conflict between the two sides was resolved in a reconciliation phase, the incident itself left a significant impact on the industry by touching upon structural issues such as the musical industry's dependence on star actors and casting transparency.
However, since this year, Ock's memory of the incident has changed. In July, Ock claimed that she had never received an apology from Kim and stated that she most regretted withdrawing her lawsuit. She also claimed that the controversy caused damage to her advertising contracts and mentioned the process by which the "Ok-jang-pan" image was attached to her. This represents Ock's current position and should be viewed separately from the fact that both parties stated they had reconciled at the time.
Kim has continued his public activities through broadcasting and YouTube, but he has not issued any separate public explanation regarding the recent claims made by Ock. Therefore, it is unreasonable to conclude that his "line of common sense" remarks were aimed at Ock.
Rather, the interesting point is that Kim clearly sets the boundaries for what he can accept in relationships with others. He explained that once he judged the acquaintance's demands had exceeded his standards, he ended the relationship despite their long friendship. Conversely, the 2022 "Ok-jang-pan" controversy serves as an example of how the interpretations and memories of the parties involved can differ completely even after time has passed.
Ultimately, this remark prompts a reconsideration of how much can be requested under the guise of "friendship" in the relationships of celebrities. While favors strengthen bonds, the moment those favors are demanded as a right, the nature of the relationship changes.
The "line of common sense" Kim mentioned ultimately boils down to the idea that before asking how much someone else can do for you, one must first judge how much they are entitled to ask. Given that a breakdown in these standards can cause even greater fractures in close relationships, this confession leaves a meaning that goes beyond simple entertainment industry gossip.
