Jang Dong-joo makes fresh start with new agency after retirement announcement

Actor Jang Dong-joo has reached an unexpected turning point in his life. After announcing a hiatus from acting due to billions of won in debt, he has signed with a new agency and is embarking on a second career as a live content creator, expressing his desire to return to acting once he has fulfilled all his financial responsibilities.

Jang surprised the entertainment industry with his sudden retirement announcement this past May. At the time, he confessed to being burdened by debts amounting to billions of won, stating, "I will temporarily suspend my acting activities until all remaining debts are resolved."

Although he had already repaid approximately 3,000,000,000 won, his position was to take full responsibility for and settle the remaining debt before standing before the public again.

Furthermore, he refuted allegations of "freeloading" raised by some, stating they were untrue and announcing plans for legal action. Since then, Jang has been exploring new career paths by communicating with fans through TikTok live broadcasts.

In the midst of this transition, Jang announced a new beginning by signing an exclusive contract with Universe Label, Korea's largest YouTube live content company.

Universe Label reportedly recruited him after highly valuing the communication skills and content production capabilities he developed throughout his acting career.

In particular, a live broadcast held following the signing demonstrated his presence in this new field, as he recorded approximately 20,000,000 won in donations from a single session.

This effectively proves his potential as a creator with an acting background.

Jang is also growing rapidly on TikTok Live. Within about three weeks of starting his broadcasts, he reached the A1 league and demonstrated his competitiveness by securing victories in live matches against celebrity creators, including Park Si-hoo.

Industry experts suggest that the quick wit, character portrayal skills, and natural ability to communicate in front of a camera that he honed as an actor are serving as major strengths in live content.

An entertainment industry insider remarked, "Since Jang Dong-joo is an actor who has portrayed various characters in different genres, his ability to handle situations and his expressiveness are excellent. His ability to create his own unique color even in live broadcasts is a major strength."

However, Jang has not completely abandoned his path as an actor.

He stated, "Right now, my biggest goal is to do my best in whatever work comes my way to ensure all remaining debts are repaid. Once I have fulfilled all my responsibilities, if given the opportunity, I also have the desire to return as actor Jang Dong-joo."

After making his debut in the 2012 play "A Midsummer Night's Dream," Jang expanded his acting spectrum through appearances in dramas such as "School 2017," "Revenge is Coming," "Mr. Temporary," "I'll Be Your Night," and "Trigger," as well as films like "Honest Candidate," "Count," and "Handsome Guys."

Jang once placed a full stop on his acting career due to unexpected trials. However, he has chosen to challenge himself in a new way rather than giving up. Attention is now focused on whether his promise to return to the camera after settling his debts will mark the beginning of a successful comeback narrative.
