Jang Yoon-jeong marks 27th debut anniversary with new song amid family crisis

Singer Jang Yoon-jeong marked her 27th debut anniversary by reflecting on her musical journey and expressing her gratitude to fans. As she continues to hold her ground on stage despite ongoing family turmoil, attention is focused on her memories of her debut and the emotions embedded in her new song.

On the 20th, Jang reminisced about her debut via social media, stating, "August 20, 1999—the day I stood on stage, soaked in rain and acting tough because I was so nervous." This was the day she rose to fame by winning the Grand Prize at the 20th Gangbyeon Song Festival.

She shared her reflections on her long career, saying, "I don't know how the temperature, the moisture, and even the emotions can still feel as vivid as yesterday, but starting from that day, I have been doing this same work for 27 years."

She continued, "I have turned the writings that were like a diary of my heart during that difficult period into a melody, creating the song 'In the Sky,' which I am now releasing. I am grateful to the many people who stay by my side so that I can remain in my position."

Jang released the digital single "In the Sky" at 12:00 PM. It is her first new release in approximately 2 years and 8 months since "Like the Wind, Like the Sky" in December 2023. The trot song captures the feeling of moments when one has barely managed to stand up but wants to collapse again, having to endure alone without being able to lean on anyone.

Jang, who contributed to the popularization of trot through numerous hits such as "Eomona!," "The Girl Next Door," and "Love," married broadcaster Do Kyung Wan in 2013, and they have one son and one daughter. For 27 years since her debut, she has established an unrivaled position in the trot genre, moving between broadcasting and live performances.

The new song is garnering even more attention as it coincides with Jang's personal circumstances. On the 21st of last month, the Songpa Police Station in Seoul transferred Jang's biological mother, Ms. Yuk, to the prosecution following her arrest on investment fraud charges. Ms. Yuk is accused of defrauding acquaintances of tens of millions of won by claiming they could earn profits by investing in audition programs using Jang's name.

Ms. Yuk has a prior record of being sentenced to prison in 2018 for fraud involving 400 million won. Jang's representatives drew a clear line, stating, "She has been out of contact with her mother for over a decade, and this incident is a solo crime unrelated to Jang Yoon-jeong."

Even as she navigates the need to separate a private family tragedy from her public life, Jang has chosen to channel her emotions into music. "In the Sky" is more than just a new song; it serves as a record for fans from a singer who has endured in her position for a long time, looking back on the years passed.
