Kim Hee Chul: I earn more on 'Knowing Bros' than with Super Junior
Super Junior's Kim Hee Chul opens up about his income, comparing his group earnings to his successful variety show career.
Super Junior member Kim Hee Chul has drawn attention by sharing behind-the-scenes stories of his career since his debut, including candid details about his income. Although he is a first-generation K-pop idol who swept Asia, his remark comparing his peak group era to his current variety show success—stating, "I earned more doing 'Knowing Bros' than when I was doing Super Junior"—has prompted reflection on the economic realities of the idol industry.

Kim Hee Chul appeared on the YouTube channel 'Swings Egennam' on the 1st, sharing stories with Jang Ji-su and Swings. While the broadcast garnered interest due to its intriguing concept, "The Universe's Biggest Star Kim Hee Chul, who almost participated in a control diss battle," Kim revealed his journey from his debut days to the present with his signature candid wit.
The conversation turned toward the financial structure of Super Junior's activities when Jang Ji-su asked a question.
"I've been curious since I was in elementary school. If Super Junior has 13 members, is the settlement divided by 13?" Jang asked, adding, "I imagine it must have been hard to make enough income to sustain a living before you became famous."
Kim responded honestly, "When we went on broadcasts, it was actually a deficit." He cautiously added, "Still, enough income came in to make a living, though I'm not sure if that was how the company structure was set up."
He then made the most eye-catching remark of the episode.
Kim revealed, "I did earn more money doing 'Knowing Bros' than when I was doing Super Junior."
Super Junior is a representative K-pop group that built a global fandom through Asia tours and overseas activities since their debut. However, in Kim's case, his earnings peaked during his variety show heyday as he expanded his career into broadcasting and advertisements alongside group activities.
In response, Swings said, "That's because you are being humble, hyung. Compared to someone like me in hip-hop, the market itself is different. Didn't you even do Asia tours?"
While acknowledging the global popularity he enjoyed as a member of Super Junior, Kim emphasized the value of the career he built on his own terms. In particular, he has maintained long-term popularity by building a solid persona as an entertainer through 'Knowing Bros.'
The broadcast also featured a lighthearted moment regarding Kim's fashion sense.
When Jang Ji-su asked, "Don't you also wear somewhat cheap clothes?" Kim responded flusteredly, "My stylist dressed me in this."
He then joked, "Our stylist was born in '03. They are watching right now. They are working hard with a dream, so what? Are you asking, 'Hyung, do you dress like a beggar?'" drawing laughter.
When a flustered Jang Ji-su explained, "I meant what you usually wear, not right now," Kim counterattacked once more.
He emphasized his pride in his style, saying, "Even the character tees I usually wear are all limited edition. I dress well."
Since his debut with Super Junior in 2005, Kim has expanded his reach as an idol, entertainer, and broadcaster. He transitioned from intense stage performances to becoming a staple of variety shows, known for his unrestrained wit and unique character.
This honest confession about his income was not mere boasting, but a reflection of how the economic value of an idol's career can shift depending on their field of activity even after achieving success.
Having remained at the top of the entertainment industry for nearly 20 years, the glory gained as a member of Super Junior and the unique territory he carved out through 'Knowing Bros' serve as the success formula that led him to his current position.
