Maeng Seung-ji Announces Retirement from Comedy: 'I Want to Enjoy the Second Act of My Life'

Comedienne Maeng Seung-ji has announced her retirement from being a comedian.

On the 28th, Maeng Seung-ji explained her decision to step down from her role as a comedienne on her SNS, saying, "I am retiring as a comedienne from now on. After being recruited through open auditions, I did public comedy for 2 years, won a rookie award, appeared in almost all variety shows on MBC, and even had a very fun time as a comedienne after moving to SBS. Since then, I haven't done public comedy for over 10 years, and since I have no intention of doing public comedy in the future, it feels awkward to be called a comedienne. I should just retire. To be honest, when I appear on broadcasts as a comedienne, I find it hard to adapt to trying too hard to be funny."

She explained that instead of broadcasting as a comedienne, she has done much more work as an actress, in broadcasting, and in production. "I will continue the work I have been doing, such as acting, broadcasting, and production, and I will live my life trying to give out a lot of good energy within my capabilities," she said, explaining that she will continue with dramas, movies, and variety shows as an actress.

On Instagram, she also shared, "People live for nearly 100 years, and I am glad I got to try being a comedienne once. Moving forward, I want to enjoy the second act of my life."

She debuted in 2013 as part of the 20th MBC open audition comedian class and won the Female Rookie Award in the comedy category at the same year's Broadcasting Entertainment Awards.

Afterward, she was active in public comedy programs such as MBC's 'The Path of Comedy' and SBS's 'People Seeking Laughter.'
