Advance filming script renews questions over Jun Hyun-moo’s Kazakhstan trip on I Live Alone

A filming script reportedly submitted before Jun Hyun-moo’s departure detailed how he would choose Kazakhstan, renewing questions about a trip presented as spontaneous on MBC’s I Live Alone. Producers previously said he chose the destination on the day, while acknowledging advance preparations.

Questions over whether Jun Hyun-moo’s Kazakhstan trip on MBC’s I Live Alone was staged have resurfaced following reports that producers prepared a filming script detailing his destination, flight and even the process of choosing where to go 14 days before departure.

The broadcast emphasized a spontaneous decision to travel. The reported documents have raised questions about how much of that sequence had already been planned, although the existence of an advance filming script alone does not establish that his actual decision differed from what viewers saw.

According to information that emerged on the 16th, MBC applied to Incheon International Airport Corporation on July 22 for permission to film on the premise that Jun Hyun-moo would travel to Kazakhstan. The application described plans to film him obtaining a ticket at the departure counter of Kazakhstan airline Air Astana and leaving the country on August 6.

The document specified a flight departing at 11:10 a.m. Jun Hyun-moo reportedly took that flight.

A script submitted with the permit application reportedly went beyond arrangements for filming his departure. It included a sequence in which Jun Hyun-moo would mention a previous trip to China, consider Kazakhstan and call actors Gu Seong Hwan and Lee Joo-seung while deciding on his destination. Those scenes appeared in the August 14 broadcast of I Live Alone.

The reported overlap has prompted questions about whether the destination-selection process, a central part of the episode’s narrative, was devised in advance alongside the airport filming arrangements.

The documents submitted to Incheon International Airport Corporation reportedly contained no filming plans for destinations other than Kazakhstan. The only airline filming consent document submitted was from Air Astana’s Korean branch. These details indicate substantial preparations for the Kazakhstan trip, but whether those preparations establish that the destination-selection sequence misrepresented events remains a separate question.

The new information has also brought renewed scrutiny to an official explanation issued by the producers on September 4. At the time, they said Jun Hyun-moo had genuinely chosen his destination on the day of departure. They said they had considered several possibilities and judged that he was likely to choose Kazakhstan.

The producers acknowledged buying staff airline tickets in advance and requesting local filming cooperation in preparation for that possibility. They also said they planned to cancel the staff tickets if Jun Hyun-moo chose another destination or could not obtain a ticket at the airport.

Their explanation was that they had anticipated and prepared for Kazakhstan, while leaving the final decision to Jun Hyun-moo. The emergence of a script reportedly detailing both his destination choice and calls to fellow entertainers has renewed questions about the relationship between those preparations and the scenes shown on air.

The controversy began with questions about filming support from tourism authorities in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and eligibility to use a rental car locally. Producers initially gave an explanation to the effect that they had received no filming support. After a support announcement from Almaty became known, they said they had received assistance with local administrative procedures and cooperation needed for filming. Viewers’ doubts grew as the explanations were perceived to have changed.

At issue is the gap between the spontaneity emphasized in the program and the actual production process. Variety programs necessarily make advance arrangements for filming routes, cast travel, flights and local cooperation. Location scouting, securing tickets and applying for filming permits can all be necessary to keep production running smoothly.

However, if the destination-selection process was documented in detail beforehand and then reproduced on screen, criticism centers on the need to explain how much of the apparently spontaneous situation was authentic. The dispute has consequently raised broader questions about the acceptable boundary between direction and real events in variety programming.

Attention is now on how the producers of I Live Alone will address the questions arising from the newly disclosed script and their earlier explanation, including calls for a clear account of any difference between what viewers understood to be an impromptu choice and what had been planned.
