‘Mr. House Husband 2’ faces backlash over staged affair suspicion

Introducing park golf—a sport gaining popularity among the middle-aged and elderly—as the mother's new interest and showing the whole family enjoying it together could have been sufficient material for a heartwarming family variety show. However, critics point out that the show unnecessarily added a provocative conflict narrative by repeatedly placing scenes that made the mother appear to be having an affair from the beginning of the broadcast.

In the episode of KBS2's 'Mr. House Husband Season 2' aired on the 19th, the daily life of Park Seo-jin's family was revealed. The starting point of the broadcast was ordinary. The father expressed his desire for his son's dating and marriage, and the family members were going about their respective daily routines.

The atmosphere shifted when changes in the mother were captured. The mother prepared to go out looking more dressed up than usual, and the family members repeatedly raised questions about her appearance, such as her bright red clothes and makeup, which looked different from before.

In particular, the narrative of suspicion intensified as scenes emerged of the mother having friendly conversations with a person named 'Teacher Jang.' The family reacted by saying, "Mom has been strange lately," and as scenes of people around them questioning her continued, the show was structured to naturally make viewers wonder, "Who is Teacher Jang?"

The father did not suspect his wife from the very beginning either. However, as the surrounding family members continuously reacted with comments like "It's strange" or "It's suspicious," he gradually appeared confused. The broadcast depicted a process where suspicion, which would not have arisen if not for the comments of those around them, gradually amplified within the family.

Ultimately, the family called the mother. However, when they could not reach her, Park Seo-jin and his family went to find her themselves, and after confirming her whereabouts, even a so-called 'tailing' scene appeared where they followed her.

This scene was also a part that had been consumed even more strongly in the previously released preview. At that time, the preview stimulated viewers' curiosity by cross-editing scenes of Park Seo-jin's mother appearing to enjoy golf with an unfamiliar man alongside the family's agitated reactions, creating an atmosphere as if the family were catching the mother having an affair. In the actual broadcast, a completely different set of facts was revealed.

The place the family went to was a golf course. However, the identity of 'Teacher Jang' was not an affair partner, but an instructor teaching the mother park golf. The mother was finding vitality through learning a new hobby, and the reality of the outings that the family found suspicious was simply exercise.

Park golf is a type of lifestyle sport designed to be played in parks using relatively simple equipment compared to regular golf. Recently, as it has spread as an item that can simultaneously solve leisure and exercise, especially among the middle-aged, cases of families enjoying it together are increasing. This broadcast itself had enough story material just through the process of the mother finding a new hobby and the family experiencing it together.

In fact, the atmosphere changed completely in the latter half of the broadcast. As Park Seo-jin and Park Hyo-jeong joined the mother and father in park golf, a family competition unfolded, and the father, who held a golf club for the first time, showed his competitive spirit. The problem lies in the process of reaching this conclusion. While expanding small changes in daily life into conflict and misunderstanding is a common narrative device in family variety shows, the subject of an 'affair' itself has a high level of provocation, so more caution is needed in its use.

Particularly in this case, it was not that an actual affair was confirmed, but a setting where the family misunderstood the mother's outing. However, as the family's suspicion, loss of contact, tailing, and the father's agitated reaction were placed consecutively in both the preview and the main broadcast, viewers had room to perceive it as a much larger incident occurring than a simple reveal of a hobby.

What is even more noteworthy is that the broadcast captured scenes showing that the filming was already underway the moment the family entered the golf course. Based on this, while one cannot conclude that the production team was secretly following them and caught them by chance, the broadcast footage naturally reveals that the family's 'raid' and the situation at the golf course were staged variety show scenes filmed in advance. Therefore, the tension of the 'affair discovery' perceived by viewers can be seen largely as a result of variety show direction and editing.

In this process, with the father showing an agitated reaction and Park Seo-jin questioning, "Who is Teacher Jang?", the broadcast for a time felt more like a situational comedy about an affair rather than a family variety show. Once it was explained that Teacher Jang was actually a park golf instructor, the tension was resolved, revealing that much of the preceding footage was a device for comedic effect.

However, subjects like 'affairs,' 'infidelity,' or 'family betrayal,' which can directly impact real-life relationships and reputations, are difficult to treat on the same level as general daily conflicts. Especially when dealing with actual family members, the boundary between staged settings for entertainment and real-life privacy becomes even more critical.

The fact that 'Mr. House Husband' has previously faced controversy for delving too deeply into the private lives of families is another reason why this issue cannot be easily dismissed. In a 2022 episode featuring Hong Sung-heon's family, the circumcision process of his middle school son, Hong Hwa-cheol, and his friends was broadcast. Following complaints from viewers, the Korea Communications Standards Commission issued a 'recommendation' regarding the broadcast. At the time, the production team explained that the decision was made voluntarily after sufficient discussion between the parent and child, but they apologized for causing discomfort.

In 2023, the broadcasting of underage children's showering scenes in an episode featuring former baseball player Choi Kyoung-hwan's family again brought the privacy of minors and filming methods under scrutiny. Although major body parts were obscured with graphics at the time, criticism was raised regarding the use of a minor's nudity as broadcast material and the inappropriate camera angles used.

Given that 'Mr. House Husband' has repeatedly faced controversy in the process of using family privacy for laughter and buzz, it is necessary to reflect on the appropriate level of expression the program should maintain, rather than simply dismissing this as 'direction intended for laughs.'

In this broadcast, the most healthy message was found away from the most provocative scenes: the mother starting a new hobby and encouraging her family to exercise, and even the father, who was initially suspicious, picking up a golf club to spend time together. In fact, the park golf competition in the latter half of the broadcast provided sufficient variety entertainment through natural family competition and laughter, without the need for a separate affair narrative.

The more a program focuses on showing a family's daily life, the clearer the line must be between stimulating viewer curiosity and trivializing private relationships. If a program must employ dramatic devices like 'suspicion of an affair → tailing → discovery' just to introduce an ordinary hobby, it is time for 'Mr. House Husband' to reconsider what its true source of entertainment should be.
