Yoo Jae-suk's 'Happy Together' beats Na Yeong-seok to lead KBS variety
KBS's revived 'Happy Together: Glad We're Not Alone' debuts with strong viewership, outperforming Na Yeong-seok's latest show.
KBS's variety show 'Happy Together: Glad We're Not Alone' (hereafter 'Happy Together'), which returned after six years, signaled a smooth start by garnering strong viewer response with stable viewership ratings and sincere performances from its very first broadcast. This season, which features a format combining music, life, and relationship narratives, is being praised for presenting a new direction for KBS variety shows by focusing on the power of people and stories rather than flashy gimmicks.

According to Nielsen Korea, a viewership rating research institution, the first episode of 'Happy Together,' which aired on the 10th, recorded a national viewership rating of 3.0% and a peak minute viewership rating of 4.8%. This is the highest first broadcast performance among KBS variety programs this year, proving its competitiveness by outperforming PD Na Yeong-seok's variety program 'Kongkong Pampam' (2.2% nationwide), which aired in the same time slot.
Instead of inheriting the talk-show-centered brand of the past, this season of 'Happy Together' has been completely revamped with a new concept that combines 'life mates' with music. The approach of people who have endured life's challenges together unfolding their stories through song is seen as an active reflection of the 'reality' and 'human storytelling' trends currently emphasized in variety content.
The program is hosted by Yoo Jae-suk, alongside Jang Hang Jun and Yoon Jong-shin, while Lee Hyori joined as a special MC for the first episode, elevating the emotional atmosphere with her characteristic empathy and honest reactions. The experience of these four individuals, who have led various music and talk programs for a long time, was credited with increasing the program's quality by naturally drawing out the participants' stories.
The first stage was performed by the chorus group 'Binkan Chaegugi,' which provided the backing for numerous hit songs in the domestic pop scene. Composed of Big Mama's Shin Yeon-ah, composer Lee Yul-eum, and chorus singer Kim Hyo-su, they delivered an emotional performance by sharing their experiences as the hidden protagonists behind iconic hits of the 1990s and 2000s, such as 'One Candle,' 'Adult Ceremony,' 'Wow,' and 'Change.'
Shin Yeon-ah explained her reason for appearing, saying, "We participated in many hit songs, but the public does not know us well," while Jang Hang Jun, watching their stage, offered high praise, stating, "A grand prize-worthy performance came from the very first team." Lee Hyori also shared her thoughts on the power of music to heal and evoke memory, saying, "I burst into tears in just a few seconds. I thought of the songs that gave me comfort during difficult times."
The 'Cheonnyeonjigi' team, consisting of Kim In-sook and Kim Hyeon-gyeong—who met as parents and have maintained a friendship for over 10 years—unfolded the special connection they share through song. In particular, the explosive vocals of Kim In-sook, a grand prize winner of the 'National Singing Contest' year-end finals, drew admiration from the cast. Yoon Jong-shin gave a high evaluation, saying, "It's at a level where they could release an album," and Yoo Jae-suk remarked, "The chemistry between the two made the stage shine even more."
In the third stage, the group Click-B appeared, reuniting as a full group for the first time in 11 years. The members brought joy to long-time fans by candidly discussing their lives, the process of their reunion, and even past conflicts. Oh Jong-hyeok directly addressed the fact that the members' relationships had been distant in the past, while Lee Hyori offered support, saying, "It was impressive that they still cherish their passion for music."
The fourth stage was performed by Bang Ye-dam and his parents, Bang Dae-sik and Jeong Mi-young. Bang Dae-sik is a musician known for creating numerous commercial and animation theme songs, and Jeong Mi-young is a veteran singer active in children's programming and broadcast music. Their stage conveyed the meaning of a musical family connecting generations, leaving a warm resonance. Yoo Jae-suk marveled, saying, "I got goosebumps all over my body," and Jang Hang Jun added, "For the first time, I felt envious of a musical family."
At the end of the broadcast, Yujun, a boy with autism spectrum disorder, and his mother Park Eun-ju took the stage under the name 'Like a Turtle.' Park explained the meaning behind the name, saying, "I included the hope that he would move forward slowly like a turtle, even if he is a little slower than other children." The main performance will continue in the next episode.
Unlike music variety shows centered on competition and elimination, this premiere differentiated itself by focusing on relationships, empathy, and life memories. The fact that most participants were not famous stars, but ordinary people and musicians who have worked steadily in their fields, clearly defines the program's identity.
Most importantly, the production team led by Yoo Jae-suk increased the program's immersion by listening to the participants' stories instead of relying on excessive laughter or provocative directing. The sincere conversations and music throughout the broadcast naturally touched the viewers' emotions, with many responding that the first episode moved them to tears.
Attention is now focused on whether 'Happy Together: Glad We're Not Alone' can establish itself as a new staple in music variety by leading with emotion and empathy. Industry observers are watching to see if this strong start, which carries meaning beyond mere viewership ratings, will lead to long-term success.
