Yoo Jae Suk unable to save 'Happy Together' as ratings hit 2.1%

Despite veteran entertainers such as Yoo Jae Suk, Jang Hang Jun, and Yoon Jong-shin taking center stage, the viewership rating for KBS2's 'Happy Together: Glad We're Not Alone' remained stuck in the 2% range. It was the lowest among terrestrial programs in the same time slot, reaffirming the reality that buzz and the star power of the cast do not necessarily translate into actual viewership ratings.

The 6th episode of 'Happy Together: Glad We're Not Alone,' which aired on the 21st, featured the 'Horn-rimmed Trio' of Yoo Jae Suk, Jang Hang Jun, and Yoon Jong-shin, along with special MCs Kwon Yuri and Sung Si-kyung, watching the performances of contestants from Groups C and D. The viewership rating for the day recorded 2.1% nationwide. During the same time slot, SBS's 'Y-Story' reached 3.7%, and even the rerun of 'A Bona Fide Killer' recorded 2.2%, both higher than 'Happy Together.'

It wasn't that the content itself was lacking. On the contrary, the contestants' stories and performances were faithful to the program's planning intention of being 'life teammates.'

In the final stage of Group C, 'Do-Re-Mi'—consisting of Seo Min-kyung, Sin I-re, and Kim Da-mi, who are considered top choices for festivals in the Gyeongnam region—appeared. These performers are experts in the event industry, handling an average of 15 performances per month, and they announced their goal of conquering the nation by selecting god's 'One Candle.' Their stable harmony and soulful vocals led the MCs to stand up, and Kwon Yuri showed interest by saying, "I want to recruit them for our 'Hyori-soo' vocals."

In Group C, besides Do-Re-Mi, 'Hwayangyeonhwa,' consisting of actors Park Hae-soo, Choi Sung Won, Im Chul-soo, and Park Jae-yoon who endured their unknown days together, and 'Famous Voice,' featuring the faceless music release powerhouse Sin Ye-young and Jeon Sang-Guen, were selected as passing teams. As contestants with different careers and genres competed on a single stage, the program secured musical diversity.

Sung Si-kyung joined Group D as a special MC. Yoon Jong-shin revealed that he had recently been rejected by Sung Si-kyung, reminiscing about the time they worked together on 'On the Street.' When Yoon joked, "Give me the song that Si-kyung threw away," Sung shot back with, "What are you going to do with it?", continuing their signature witty banter.

The first participating team, 'Red C,' is a two-member band composed of brothers Kim Kyung-chan and Kim Eun-chan. The two are singer-songwriters with experience winning gold at the Yoo Jae-ha Music Competition, and they presented an intense rock stage combining guitar and vocals through Shin Jung-hyeon and Yup Jazz's 'Beauty.' The older brother, Kim Kyung-chan, even revealed his past connection with Yoo Jae Suk, having met him on an entertainment program as a guitar prodigy.

The second team, 'Ruboce,' is a popera group that has performed at approximately 5,000 weddings. They shared that they once struggled between the dreams of being actors and singers, but eventually realized that continuing music itself was their identity. Recalling his own days of obscurity, Jang offered advice to the effect that while he once thought it was 'cheating' to make money from what he wanted to do, opportunities eventually come if one persists.

The team that graced the end of the broadcast was 'Inti Band,' consisting of Natty and Lee Hae-in. Having formed a bond through an audition program, the two expanded their relationship into being an artist and a director. In particular, Lee explained her transition from trainee life to becoming a director, sharing the story of how she prepared for the start of 'Kiss of Life' with Natty.

Natty described Lee as her "savior who makes me shine," stating that Lee held onto her at the moment she was about to give up the path of an idol. Lee also called Natty her muse and the being that made a new dream possible.

The two selected TWICE's 'Feel Special.' After the stage ended, Yoon evaluated that the sincerity between the two made the performance shine.

The problem is that despite putting significant effort into the cast and the stages, the viewership rating failed to follow suit. While 'Happy Together' attempts to differentiate itself by combining famous MCs with music and life narratives, the 2.1% figure shows that the program's current competitiveness is difficult to secure through the star power of the performers alone.

In particular, the result of falling behind even to rerun programs is even more painful. As we enter an era where the competitiveness of terrestrial variety shows is no longer determined solely by the host's recognition or the cast's buzz, 'Happy Together' seems to need clear narrative devices and a unique program identity that goes beyond the contestants' stories and the competition itself to draw in viewers.

Ultimately, this broadcast clearly highlighted the gap between stage quality and viewership ratings. Attention is now focused on whether 'Happy Together' can find a way to rebound despite its 2.1% rating, even with a powerful host like Yoo Jae Suk and multiple star MCs.
