Gong Hyo-jin corrects outdated weight rumors: 'I am 53kg, not 44kg'
Actress Gong Hyo-jin clarifies her current weight is 53kg, correcting outdated information from 2014 caused by extreme stress and a car accident.
Actress Gong Hyo-jin has drawn a line regarding the perception of her weight, noting that her "44kg" image from over 10 years ago—a result of rapid weight loss due to extreme stress—is being incorrectly used to describe her current physique. While spending relaxing time in New York with her husband, Kevin Oh, Gong set the record straight by revealing her current weight is 53kg.

On the 20th, Gong posted photos from her trip on social media, writing, “I am not 44kg, I am 53kg.” The photos showed her standing outdoors with a relaxed expression, wearing a pink sleeveless dress and a bucket hat. As her past weight was being mentioned again due to her slim physique, she personally stepped in to provide the correct figure.
Gong's "44kg" figure was not her recent weight, but a result of filming the 2014 drama "It's Okay, That's Love." She previously revealed on her YouTube channel this May that while she weighed approximately 53kg when filming began, a combination of a car accident and extreme stress during production made it difficult for her to eat, causing her weight to drop to 44–46kg by the end of filming.
The situation at that time was not a simple case of dieting or weight loss. Gong recalled that the extreme stress made it difficult for food to go down her throat, and even sitting still was a struggle. She explained it was a period where the pressure surrounding the production and the psychological strain following the accident led to significant physical changes.
The issue lies in the fact that this past number has been repeatedly used as a defining descriptor for Gong even after a decade has passed. Because the weight from those unique circumstances in 2014 has resurfaced in news headlines and online content as if it were her current weight, the actress felt compelled to personally correct the record: “I am 53kg now.”
Gong has always been relatively honest about her weight. In content released this year, she mentioned her preferred weight and explained that weight can fluctuate between morning and evening, but the extreme weight loss in the past was a separate case tied specifically to her physical and mental state at that time.
Notably, Gong did not wait for a question to be asked; she proactively corrected her weight via social media. This can be seen as an intention to no longer allow outdated information from a decade ago to define her current self.
Gong's appearance and physique have long been subjects of public interest. Standing 172cm tall and known for her distinct fashion sense, she has established herself as both a leading actress and a fashion icon. However, continuous scrutiny of her outward appearance has sometimes resulted in specific weights or physical traits being fixed as part of her identity.
Furthermore, Gong has maintained a demanding professional schedule. In the recently concluded Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation Friday-Saturday drama "A Bona Fide Killer," she played Yoo Bo-na, a working mother who is also a killer, marking her first serious foray into action acting since her debut. The series concluded after recording a personal best viewership rating of 10.7% nationwide.
After finishing the project, Gong chose rest over intense activity. She recently shared glimpses of her life in the United States on social media, posting, “Starting my first days off this year,” while walking around New York with Kevin Oh.
New York holds special significance for the couple. Gong and Kevin Oh held their wedding in New York in October 2022, and Kevin has since returned to daily life after completing his military service. Recent social media posts show the couple enjoying a stable life together following their marriage.
For Gong, this "53kg" revelation is more than just a weight update. While an actress's body is often reduced to a number by the public, failing to consider the context and the passage of time can distort the truth.
Since her past weight loss was a result of accidents and stress rather than healthy weight management, caution is needed when using it as a descriptor for her current slimness. Through this correction, Gong has effectively put a brake on the way a single moment from her past defines her present.
For an actress, the passage of time means more than just physical changes; it involves evolving roles, lifestyles, and mental states. If her 2014 weight of 44kg was a trace of extreme stress, her 53kg in 2026 represents the woman currently enjoying rest with her loved one after a successful career.
Ultimately, this clarification is not about the numbers themselves, but about the actress's desire to define herself. Having shown a new side of her talent through "A Bona Fide Killer," Gong is now also reclaiming her identity by setting the record straight on an old label.
