Miser or just business? Jeon Won-joo reignites fee controversy
Actress Jeon Won-joo faces scrutiny after linking her YouTube production halt to appearance fee negotiations, sparking debate over her frugal image.
Actress Jeon Won-joo has once again found herself at the center of controversy regarding money after directly addressing issues surrounding her YouTube appearance fees. Following a previous controversy regarding her frugal habits—specifically sharing a single drink among multiple people at a cafe—public opinion is now divided as she linked the halt in her YouTube channel's production to appearance fee negotiations.

On the 11th, Jeon appeared on the YouTube channel 'Samija, Not Omija,' where she spoke with long-time friends, actress Sa Mi-ja and Kim Kwan-soo. When Sa asked why she had stopped her YouTube activities, Jeon expressed her intention to resume, saying, "I am going to start again now." She continued, "When I said I wanted to raise this (money) a little, they said they would quit, so I just said let's just do it."
Jeon confessed that she had also considered quitting the channel. She explained that she decided to continue because she felt she "shouldn't be too obsessed with this (money)." In response, Kim advised, "It is about time you stop obsessing over such things."
Based on Jeon's remarks, there is room to interpret that her interests clashed with the production team during negotiations for an increase in appearance fees, which ultimately led to the original team ceasing production. However, specific appearance fee amounts, negotiation terms, or the detailed discussion process between both parties have not been disclosed.
Previously, in August, the production team of 'Jeon Won-ju In-gong' announced that the team responsible for everything from channel creation to operation would no longer be producing content. While some speculated about Jeon's health due to the sudden departure of the entire production team, the team and her agency explained at the time that it was simply a process of contract termination and channel reorganization. They also stated that there were no issues with Jeon's health and that the channel would restart centered around her agency.
The explanation Jeon provided this time adds new context to the official explanation given previously. While the explanation of the contract termination between the existing production team and the agency cannot be said to be false, Jeon's mention of the appearance fee increase reveals that there were additional disagreements regarding financial conditions during the production process. However, this cannot be concluded as definitive proof of a full-scale conflict with the production team.
The controversy is also being fueled by the unique philosophy of frugality Jeon has shown on broadcasts over the years. Jeon has long been viewed as a representative 'icon of frugality' in the entertainment industry, sharing anecdotes such as her city gas bill being only 1,370 won because she barely uses heating at home, as well as frugal habits like hand-washing laundry and recycling.
In particular, this past February, a controversy known as the '3 people, 1 drink' incident arose when a video was released showing Jeon and her daughter-in-law sharing a single drink at a cafe. In the video, the daughter-in-law explained that even when three people go to a cafe, Jeon only orders one drink, which led some netizens to criticize her, saying it was disrespectful to small business owners.
However, this controversy required correction after the full context of the situation was revealed. The production team of 'Jeon Won-ju In-gong' clarified that they had coordinated with the cafe, the filming location, in advance, and that all staff members who entered the scene had ordered drinks. Along with the explanation that Jeon shared a drink with her daughter-in-law because she could not consume a large amount of coffee, the production team apologized for causing discomfort through the content.
Nevertheless, the impression left by the controversy was not insignificant. Because a person known to possess assets worth billions of won repeatedly showed extreme consumption reduction in daily life, it sparked a social debate regarding where the line between 'frugality' and 'stinginess' lies. While frugality can be respected as a personal life philosophy, social evaluation can change depending on whether the act imposes a burden on others, businesses, or those working together.
The scale of Jeon's wealth is also a subject that has drawn public attention. Through broadcasts, Jeon has revealed that she holds approximately 3 billion won in stocks and 1 billion won in gold, and she is known to own a building in Sinchon and an apartment in Cheongdam-dong, Seoul. However, since this information is based on wealth-related statements Jeon made on broadcasts, it cannot be assumed to represent her total actual assets.
Interestingly, Jeon herself has recently expressed intentions to change her attitude toward money. This past February, she stated her intent to use her wealth for herself as well, saying, "I should become a Jeon Won-joo who spends freely, rather than one who trembles [with frugality]." This signified a shift from a life focused on accumulating wealth to one focused on spending for herself.
In this context, it is necessary to be cautious about interpreting these remarks on appearance fees simply as 'greed.' Demanding fair compensation for one's labor and content appearance is a natural right for entertainers, and the logic that an elder actress should concede during fee negotiations is not necessarily valid. The core issue lies in what conditions were proposed and how they clashed with the production team.
The nature of the YouTube platform has also changed. Unlike traditional broadcasting systems where stations set production costs and fees, YouTube involves a complex mix of an individual's popularity, views, production costs, and advertising revenue distribution. Because a famous celebrity's personal channel operates essentially like a small media company, contract terms between the talent and the production team often dictate the continuity of the content.
This is why Jeon's case is so notable. The fact that an actress in her late 80s entered the new media environment of YouTube, secured approximately 120,000 subscribers, and created branded content demonstrates the generational shift in the broadcasting industry. It also reveals how the relationship between 'stars and production teams' in traditional broadcasting is being restructured into more direct contract and revenue models on digital platforms.
Jeon has already expressed her intention to resume YouTube activities. Even if her contract with the previous production team ended due to disagreements over appearance fees, she has chosen to continue her activities through new methods rather than abandoning the platform entirely.
Ultimately, the core of this controversy is not whether Jeon 'likes money.' There is a clear gap between demanding fair compensation for labor and being perceived as having an excessive obsession with money, and that boundary is judged by how one treats the other party during negotiations. Attention is now focused on how Jeon, long loved as an 'icon of frugality,' will demonstrate not just how to save money, but how to spend it and how to negotiate her own value.
