Park Ji-hyun finds closure in Shanghai after family business failure

Singer Park Ji-hyun has returned to Shanghai, a city steeped in the painful memories of his childhood. The place he was once forced to leave following his family's business failure has become a space of reflection and gratitude for the successful singer.

In the July 31 broadcast of the MBC entertainment program 'I Live Alone,' Park's journey through Shanghai captured viewers' attention, as it was far more than a simple vacation; it was a journey to confront a pivotal chapter of his life.

“I lived in Shanghai when I was young,” Park revealed, noting that he spent about two years there from fourth to sixth grade. Despite the passage of time, the Chinese he learned as a child remains fluent, and his ability to converse naturally with locals demonstrated that those early years had never truly left him.

He revisited the school he attended as a child, reminiscing about receiving snacks at the back gate and the innocent memories of his first love, briefly transporting himself back to his younger self.

However, Shanghai did not hold only happy memories.

Park visited the site where his parents once operated their business. His parents had initially found success with an accessory shop and a snack stand, building hope for a new life. However, they later faced significant hardship when they attempted to launch a large-scale Korean cuisine restaurant.

“I only remember my mother crying every day. We returned home after failing completely,” he confessed, recalling the difficult period his family endured.

The location where his family's dreams once crumbled has since transformed entirely. Rather than harboring resentment, Park accepted his past with composure, viewing even those failures as essential steps in shaping the person he is today.

Later, Park visited a luxury restaurant in Shanghai to enjoy a special moment. Surrounded by golden interiors and a magnificent night view, he joked, “I booked a place like this because I am successful now. If I weren't, I wouldn't have been able to come.” It was a poignant moment: the boy who once struggled was now using his own hard-earned money to host a dear friend.

His guest was a classmate from his years studying Chinese. For his friend, who is currently preparing for a doctoral program, Park gifted an engraved pen, offering his support: “I hope you become a doctor.” More than the lavish meal, his sincerity toward this long-standing connection was the highlight of the evening.

Reflecting on his time in Shanghai, Park remarked, “If I could show my current self to my 20-year-old self, I think he would be moved.”

He continued, “I sometimes wonder what would have happened if I hadn't gone to China, or if the business had succeeded. But because we failed there, I became a singer. So it's okay. Even the bad times are good memories when I look back now.”

Life often takes unexpected turns. For Park, the failure of his family's business was not an end, but a catalyst for a new beginning. By returning to the site of his past losses, he did not just revisit old wounds; he confronted the person he has become through those challenges.
