Shim Hyun-seop: 'I earned 320 million won in a day, but inherited 1.5 billion won in debt'

Comedian Shim Hyun-seop is opening up about the unimaginable income he earned during his prime and the heavy burden of family responsibility he had to shoulder in the aftermath.

Shim's answer was unexpected.

He confessed, "I ended up taking on my mother's 1.5 billion won debt, and I paid it off in seven years."

He continued, "When I was 40, my mother was hospitalized," adding, "If it hadn't been for my mother's debt, I wouldn't have earned that much."

Though he was a star enjoying immense popularity during his heyday, money was not merely a symbol of success to him; it was the responsibility to protect his family and the pillar of his life.

Shim was a leading comedian during the golden age of KBS 2TV's 'Gag Concert,' earning national affection through various segments such as 'Morning in the Savannah.' He dominated the variety entertainment scene in the early 2000s with his wit and unique characters.
