J.Y. Park reveals why he hired Bang Si-hyuk as his first employee

Singer and music producer J.Y. Park has revealed his unique management philosophy while reflecting on his special connection with HYBE Chairman Bang Si-hyuk. The fact that these two industry titans, who have launched numerous global artists, began their relationship as "CEO and employee" is drawing renewed attention.

During episode 409 of the MBC entertainment program "The Manager," which aired on August 1, the daily life of JYP Entertainment leader J.Y. Park was showcased. While sharing a meal with his staff, Park discussed his standards for organizational culture and talent acquisition.

In a moment of reminiscence, he revealed, "My first employee was Bang Si-hyuk."

While Bang currently leads the global entertainment giant HYBE, he was once a colleague and employee who produced music alongside Park.

Park cited an unexpected reason for choosing Bang. "It was comfortable because he didn't try to look good to me," Park said, adding, "If the person in front of me is comfortable, I am comfortable too. Once someone starts trying to impress me, it becomes uncomfortable."

This sentiment is more than a personal preference; it is central to the organizational culture Park values. He emphasized that individuals with their own thoughts and individuality produce better results than those who suppress their opinions to cater to their superiors.

Park also offered advice to his employees, noting, "Since the work is demanding, it is natural for it to be difficult."

He explained that while the trial and error inherent in learning a job is expected, employees should avoid the unnecessary tension caused by "walking on eggshells" around a supervisor.

"You might be clumsy when you first start a job. Since I have to teach you how to avoid mistakes meticulously, I will talk to you endlessly. That part should be difficult," he said. "But it shouldn't be difficult because you are busy checking on my mood. You really shouldn't do that."

Park's remarks offer insight into his philosophy regarding the relationship between creators and their teams. Given that the music industry relies heavily on individual creativity, he believes an environment where diverse ideas can be freely shared is more vital than blind obedience.

Bang developed his musical capabilities as a producer under Park before eventually establishing HYBE, growing it into a world-class K-pop powerhouse. Although the two now lead separate paths, they share the legacy of being the primary architects who reshaped the Korean music industry.
