Film critic Kim Do-hoon slams 'introvert concept' used by actors

Film critic Kim Do-hoon has sparked a heated debate within the entertainment industry after posting comments that appeared to target an actor embroiled in an attitude controversy following a recent variety show appearance. Although he did not mention a specific individual by name, the timing of the post coinciding with recent broadcast content has led many to interpret his criticism as being aimed at actor Jung Jun-won.

On the 4th, Kim posted on his SNS, “Lately, there are celebrities who appear on broadcasts, adopt an introvert concept, and pretend they can't do anything even when asked. Strangely, men always do this.”

He continued, “True introverts are people who try to be even more active than usual when they are in a crowd or in front of a camera to avoid ruining the atmosphere,” describing them as “people who tremble with shame in the car on the way back.”

He was raising concerns regarding the tendency to package a passive presence on a broadcast as a mere personality trait.

Kim strongly pointed out, “Please stop adopting this strange introvert concept. It is the exact same concept as people 20 years ago on broadcasts saying, ‘I'm a bit eccentric.’ Professionals who stand in front of a camera while receiving appearance fees should not act that way.”

In another post, he increased the intensity of his criticism by addressing gender dynamics.

He argued, “I don't want to make this a gender issue, but it is a gender issue. If a female actress acted like, ‘I'm originally this kind of person, so just accept it,' her career would end immediately, but for male actors, everyone protects them as if it were some unique personality.”

While Kim did not name a specific actor, his remarks are being linked to Jung Jun-won, who faced backlash regarding his attitude following his recent appearance on the MBC variety show ‘Hangout with Yoo.’

In the episode of ‘Hangout with Yoo’ aired on the 1st, Jung appeared alongside Yoo Jae Suk, Haha, and others to showcase his adaptation to the variety format.

During the broadcast, when Yoo Jae Suk asked, “Have you seen our work?” Jung responded by asking, “Can I speak honestly?” before trailing off with, “It's something good to watch lightly...”

Furthermore, during a short-form acting challenge, he struggled to deliver short lines, leading to a moment where Yoo Jae Suk had to wrap things up by saying, “Let's move on to the next one.” The cast also appeared flustered, with Haha reacting by throwing his hat, prompting some viewers to question Jung's attitude.

However, some counterarguments have emerged, stating, “It could be the natural nervousness of an actor who does not have much variety show experience,” and “One should not criticize the introverted personality itself.”
